Kirkcaldy and Central Fife Sports Council Awards

The 2016 Kirkcaldy and Central Fife Sports Council Annual Awards were presented on Thursday 2nd March at Fife College in Kirkcaldy. Chairman Alistair Cameron welcomed representatives from clubs in membership of the Sports Council and provided a short resume of the year past and his hopes for the period ahead. Mark Goodall from Fife College delivered a short thought provoking session for the second year before Guest Speaker Derek Rae described his experiences of the last year that began with a London Marathon PB, selection for the Paralympic Games in Rio and attendance at a GB Athletics training camp in Kenya.

This set the tone for the main section of the evening, the annual awards that were coordinated by MC Ken White. Mathew Elder from the Fife Free Press brilliantly interviewed the individual category winners.

Derek Rae from Kirkcaldy deservedly won the Disability Sports Person of the Year Award sponsored by PLM Optometrists. One of the runners up in this section was Eleanor Clark from Kirkcaldy who is heading out to Cape Town in just over a week for the World Blind Bowls Championships. Derek was also recognised as a runner up in the Sports Personality of the Year Award sponsored by Fife College.

Owen Miller from Dunfermline who trains with Steve Doig of Fife AC in Kirkcaldy was awarded the Garry Innes Memorial Shield supported by the Sports Council.

Disability Sport Fife is fortunate to have an outstanding team of volunteers, peer mentors and committed coaches. No DSF coach is more committed than Pamela Robson from Burntisland and she was recognised in two categories by the Sports Council. Pamela was a runner up in the Coach of the Year section sponsored by Dundas Estates and also in the Service to Sport Award sponsored by SALSC.

The Chairman and President of Disability Sport Fife attended the Awards Evening as guests of Kirkcaldy and Central Fife Sports Council. George McDonald from the Sports Council gave the Vote of Thanks and brought to an end another evening of celebration and success for a massively inclusive Sports Council.

Fife Fund Raiser Assists Wheelchair Racer

Over the years Disability Sport Fife (DSF) has been well supported by a significant number of community fund raisers. Their commitment, enthusiasm and hard work has enabled many DSF members to access funding for equipment and training, travel to events and access to medical support. Performance sports participation is an expensive business and DSF has benefitted from the generosity of a wide range of community based charity fund raisers.

Neil Smart from Kirkcaldy is the latest fund raiser to identify DSF as a “good cause” worthy of support. Neil has a strong circle of friends and his strategy involves inviting them to a night out with appropriate entertainment. Ticket receipts, raffle and auction raise the funds for the “good cause” and DSF was fortunate to be the recipient organisation of his most recent social event.

DSF recently introduced Neil to Susanne McGrath – who will be the beneficiary of Neil’s most recent fund raising efforts – at the DSF office at the Michael Woods Sports and Leisure Centre. Neil’s “night out” raised over £1000 towards the purchase of a new racing wheelchair for Susanne.

Susanne has completed one marathon to date in a borrowed second hand DSF wheelchair and this year she plans to compete in marathons in Dublin and Edinburgh. Susanne recently attended a wheelchair racing workshop led by the lead Athletics GB Coach and was advised that she requires a new bespoke chair and DSF agreed to help. The efforts of Neil and his friends have secured over one third of the costs of that new chair which is now on order.

Fife Coaches Assemble for Sports Coach UK Workshop

22 coaches from a wide variety of sports attended the fourth learning and development course/workshop organised by Disability Sport Fife (DSF) this year. The sports coach UK Workshop (How to Coach Disabled People in Sport) was held at the Michael Woods Sports and Leisure Centre on Monday 27th Feb and attracted interest from 22 coaches from east, west and central Fife. Everybody Active Team’s Match Day Action at Pittodrie

Registered charity Sport Aberdeen, in partnership with AFCCT, run the Everybody Active Football Team for people with additional support needs. Everybody Active, facilitated by Sport Aberdeen is an exciting and extensive programme aimed at opening up sport and physical activity to adults with a learning disability.

The Everybody Active Football Team had an action packed night to remember on Wednesday 15th February when they were invited to attend the AFC v Motherwell match at Pittodrie.

Fourteen players were joined by their coaches, supporters and family at the match where everyone enjoyed an exciting first half, which saw the Don’s go 4-0 up with a flurry of goals.  The team got the chance to take to the pitch themselves at half time where they played two small sided games, led by their coaches Andy Will and Scott Duncan from AFCCCT.

For the players, many of whom are Aberdeen FC fans, the chance to play at Pittodrie in front of a 10,500 strong crowd was a once in a lifetime experience.  Everyone did themselves proud with some excellent play, Adam Rooney certainly wasn’t the only player to score a hat-trick in the stadium on the night!

The final score saw a 7-2 win for Aberdeen making it the highest scoring match of the 2016/ 17 domestic season. An action packed night for all.

Everybody Active Football sessions are open to male and female players aged 16 years and over with a physical, sensory or learning disability.  Sessions take place at Sheddocksley Sports Centre on Fridays from 1:30 – 3pm during school term time.  In addition to weekly training, the players have the opportunity to play in local and national festivals and tournaments.

Outstanding Performances by Fife Athletes in Edinburgh

Disability Sport Fife (DSF) considers the East Series Cross Country programme organised by scottishathletics and Scottish Disability Sport as one of the major successes in the development of athletics in the east of Scotland. DSF member organisation schools entered over 90 athletes for Round 3 of the East Series at the Beveridge Park in Kirkcaldy and for round 4 at Peffermill in Edinburgh on 21st February, around 50 athletes from Bell Baxter HS, Woodmill HS, Balwearie HS and Lochgelly HS made the journey across the Forth. Athletes are awarded points over the four rounds of the East Series to determine the overall year group champions. In round 4 there were once again many fine Fife athlete performances.

The introduction of the 500 metres race has encouraged a number of novice performers to take up the sport. Eilidh Lennox (S2) and Richy Stacey (S2) from Bell Baxter HS fell in to this category and they recorded winning performances in the girls and boys S2 races.

In the girls 1K, Fife schools produced all but one of the fastest year group times. Sophie Coughlin Bell Baxter HS S1 – 5:58; Amy Dignan Lochgelly HS S2 – 7:39; Megan Wilson Woodmill HS S3 – 6:45; Kerry Kotlewski Bell Baxter HS S4 – 7:23; Taylor McDowall Balwearie HS S6 – 8.58. Sophie is only a first year pupil yet she ran the fastest time of all the year group winners.

Once again in the boys 1K races it was a similar story. There were year group winners from Fife schools from first year through to sixth year. Nathan Smith Woodmill HS S1 – 7:21; Edwin Barron Woodmill HS S2 – 4:58; Owen Handley Woodmill HS S3 – 5:55; Arran Howe Bell Baxter HS S4 – 4:41; Reece Dickson Balwearie HS S5 – 5:08; Cameron Healy Balwearie HS S6 – 6:22. Connor Brown S3 Woodmill HS recorded the fastest time of the day for an athlete with a physical impairment and the seventh fastest overall time of any 1K athlete – 5:18. Well done to Arran Howe S4 who recorded the fastest 1K time of the day.

Twins Louise and Michelle Harley from Lochgelly HS S4 finished first and second in the girls 2K race with Louise crossing the line first in 14:56. In the equivalent event for boys Mathew Blair Woodmill HS S5 ran the fastest overall 2K time of 10:32 and Alex Evans from Balwearie HS the fastest S4 time.

All the Fife athletes then waited anxiously to find out the overall results for the 2017 East Series Cross Country. Team Fife headed back to the kingdom reflecting on another successful east Series and looking forward to the Fife cross Country Championships at the Beveridge Park and the Scottish Championships at Bellahouston Park later in the year.

7s League

Lochgelly HS in Top Form at Fife 7s Football

With support from the Scottish FA, the Fife Referees Association and Kirkcaldy HS, Disability Sport Fife (DSF) organised round 2 of the DSF 7s Football League on Wednesday 22nd February. Apart from the glory of winning the Fife senior and junior titles, schools were challenging for the honour of representing Fife at the Scottish 7s League Championships to be held later in the year in the West of Scotland.

The two most improved schools of the year to date are Madras College and Lochgelly HS. Madras College got off to their best start ever with a first time victory over current champions Balwearie HS in the S3-S6 competition. Lochgelly HS senior team however finished the day in the senior competition with a win against Madras College and a 1-1 draw with Balwearie HS to top the table. Shakeel Ul Haq from Lochgelly HS was top scorer with 3 goals.

Lochgelly HS and Madras College contested the S1/S2 junior league with Lochgelly HS ending the round undefeated. Airen Foley and Brodie Adam were added to the Lochgelly HS squad for round two with great effect. The former scored 9 goals and the latter 4 goals in two of the best performances to date by players in the junior league.

The final round of the 7s League will be held on Wednesday 22nd March and the outcome of both senior and junior sections will be determined on that date. Balwearie HS and Lochgelly HS share the lead in the S3 – S6 section with 9 points each and Lochgelly HS lead the junior section comfortably with 11 points and Madras College lie second with 7 points.

Davie Honeyman and Lee Bailey from the Scottish FA Active Fife team presented new footballs to the participating schools. DSF has recently circulated registration forms to all eligible Fife schools for the 2017 DSF/Active Fife Performance Football Academy programme. This involves Scottish FA coaches going into schools for pupils with additional support needs after Easter and providing coaching. In addition the partnership will be offering walking football and coach education opportunities throughout the remainder of 2017.
