Parasport Festivals Kick Off supported by Celtic FC Foundation

The SDS Parasport Festival Series funded by the Celtic FC Foundation kicked off this week with two phenomenal events taking place in the West of Scotland and Tayside.

SDS works with many partners at local, regional and national levels and the Parasport Festivals are just one example of how all partners come together to make a difference in the lives of the young people who participate at the events.

To make these happen, Scottish governing bodies of sport and  local sports clubs deliver the fun sport activities. They are always very ably supported in their delivery by Young Leaders from Local Authorities and students from nearby further and higher education institutions.

The purpose of these events is to introduce mainstream school pupils with physical disabilities and hearing and visual impairments to a wide range of sports that they may not experience at school, and then offer tailored support to enable them to regularly participate in their chosen sport.

To date almost 2,000 young people have benefitted from attending these events with an average transition rate into weekly activity of 13%.

If you or anyone you know would like to attend a para sport festival, there are still opportunities to participate in the events listed below:

Region Date Venue
East of Scotland Friday 27th March 2020 Forrester HS, Edinburgh
Grampian Friday 18th September 2020 Aberdeen Sports Village
Highland Saturday 26th September 2020 Dingwall Sports Centre
Central Scotland Wednesday 28th October 2020 Grangemouth Sports Complex

If you are unable to make any of these events but would like to get involved in disability sport please get in touch by emailing admin@scottishdisabilitysport.com or telephone Scottish Disability Sport on 0131 317 1130.

See reports from the West of Scotland and Tayside events below.

Fun was the Theme of the Day at the West of Scotland Parasport

On the 2nd March 2020 the 11th West Parasport Festival was held at the On-X Linwood for the first time. We had children and young people from P5-S6 mainstream schools from the West with physical disabilities and visual and hearing impairments attending to try out various sports. There were 59 participants from 43 schools from 12 out of 13 local authorities in the west of Scotland.

The On-X was the new venue due to changes at Ravenscraig, although different the new venue provided an opportunity to offer swimming for the very first time.

The event was a great success and couldn’t have happened without the partners listed below who delivered their sport in a fun way to engage all pupils.

Thanks must go to the 25 Young Sports Leaders from Renfrewshire Leisure and 20 students from West College Scotland who supported the event and brought their positivity and enthusiasm to support deliverers and participants on the day. Paralympic and Deaflympic role models Danielle Joyce and Sam Ingram were on hand to support activities and tell everyone about their journey.

Andrew MacKenzie (SDS West Regional Development Manager) said: “The event was great, and we are so happy the participants are getting to try so many different sports. The smiles on their faces told the story very well. Bringing these opportunities for the children and for sports to promote their sessions and build on the pathways really shows how good the Parasport is. Having Paralympians at the event really shows that you can make it to the top of your level and hopefully this will encourage children to stay in sport, whether they go to the top level or for fun.”

A special thank you to the Celtic FC Foundation for supporting the event, hosts Renfrewshire Leisure, the West Branches, West Active Schools, all the sports, Renfrewshire Young Sports Leaders, West College Scotland students and the On-X staff for their support. With a big thank you to the parents, teachers and helpers for supporting as well.

We look forward to following up with all participants who attended to support the next step of their journey in parasport.

If you or anyone you know would like to get involved in disability sport please email admin@scottishdisabilitysport.com or alternatively telephone Scottish Disability Sport on 0131 317 1130.

Junior Football in Fife for Pupils with ASN

The Fife 7s League, in partnership with the Scottish FA and Kirkcaldy HS, continues to flourish. Now in its tenth year, the League has introduced more young players to competitive football than any similar initiative.
In addition to the 7s League, schools can access the long running DSF 5s Championships, held annually in March as part of the Disability Sport Fife Sports Festival. Disability Sport Fife (DSF) has extended its football partnership with Glenrothes Strollers and Fife Sports and Leisure Trust to offer football coaching for junior players on Tuesday evenings.
For the sixth year the Fife Council / Scottish FA Football Development Officers and DSF are offering a strand of the Fife Football Performance Academy that is inclusive and provides for players with additional support needs in schools across Fife. Specialist coaching will be provided by selected coaches appointed by the Scottish Fife Football Development Officers. Schools that respond positively will receive a further circular with dates, times and venues and an invitation to nominate according to the Academy criteria.
DSF hopes to increase the number of schools involved in the programme this year. The Academy programme will start after the Easter holidays. Schools wishing to be involved must not hesitate to return the “expression of interest” form recently circulated to DAS schools. The closing date for expression of interest forms to be returned to the office is Wednesday 18 March.

Sport First – Focus on Boccia

Two years ago, Ross MacNeil started a journey in the Paralympic sport of boccia that would have a huge impact on his and his family’s lives.

Ross had struggled his entire life with cerebral palsy and, after leaving school, developed depression and high anxiety due to the lack of a social outlet. He was having frequent outbursts of anger and felt out of place.

Sport helped Ross to turn his life around, to the point where his father now says: “Boccia has made Ross the person he is. It’s really changed his attitude in life.”

So how did he discover the benefits of sport? Read the full article here:

Owen Miller wins first of 2020 Area Sports Council Awards

Disability Sport Fife nominated over 20 athlete members for one of the three 2020 Area Sports Councils Awards. Dunfermline and West Fife was the first Sports Council to present awards and last week Owen Miller from Dunfermline was the winner of the East Kilbride Sports Council Disabled Athlete of the Year award. The standard of competition is exceptionally high in west Fife and congratulations to Owen on his award. Tokyo 2020 is of course his aim and ambition for 2020.

Richard Brickley OBE MBE Chairman DSF (SCIO) Board of Charity Trustees

Owen Miller

Inclusion on the British Athletics Paralympic Futures Academy Programme for the 2018/2019 season came at exactly the right time for Owen Miller and coach Steve Doig from Fife Athletic Club and they have taken full advantage. Owen was disappointed when he missed out on selection for the Paralympic Games in London in 2012 but he has never given up hope of one day achieving his dream of Paralympic Games selection.

Owen competed on Saturday 25th May in Manchester at the BMC Grand Prix at Sport City. Owen knocked 0.4 off his PB for 1500m for a time of 3:56.32. The Dunfermline athlete was then ranked number one in T20 class on the WPA world rankings following this run. Owen is now second on the all time British T20 1500m list. This opened up the opportunity to compete at the very highest level of world Para athletics and earn him his very first full Great Britain vest later in the year.
Owen also secured a fine second place in T20 1500 metres at the Manchester International Meet. Owen’s time was 3.59.98 in an event that was won by the world champion Michael Brannigan from the USA. Owen was the first T20 British athlete to cross the line. Coach Steve Doig was pleased with Owen’s run considering he had to pull back on training because of injury. Owen ran two sub four minute runs within a matter of a few days.

Owen rounded off an amazing year by finishing 6th in a field of fourteen at the WPA World Athletics Championships T20 1500m in Dubai. Owen was in the mix for a medal with 300 metres to go and committed totally in the run in. The last 80 metres were a real challenge and he finished in a very creditable 6th in 3:59.87. Owen crossed the finish line ahead of the world number 1 Michael Brannigan from the USA and the reigning European champion Cristiano Pereira from Portugal.

Owen has been a massive influence on the Disability Sport Fife cross country and middle distance programmes and he has always been a superb role model for emerging young athletes. Owen has dominated Scottish T20 middle distance running for a decade.

Connor Brown

Connor Brown from Dunfermline is Fife’s leading all round ambulant physically disabled sportsman, excelling in track and field, cross country, rugby, swimming and karate.

The former Woodmill HS pupil rounded off his most successful year to date with a 4th Para kata gold medal and the 2019 individual trophy as overall Grand Prix Grand Slam Champion at Ravenscraig. A most fitting end of season outcome for a very dedicated young sportsman whose commitment to daily strength and conditioning is exemplary.

Connor is coached by Paul Giannandrea at the very inclusive JKS Scotland club in Dunfermline. Paul and his team promote karate for players of all levels of ability including those with additional support needs. Connor has been a club member for many years and has been inspired by club members and coaches to commit fully to the training regime expected of high performance karate players.

Connor (T37 and F37) is also a member of Fife AC and is coached by Steve Doig. Under Steve’s guidance, Connor has enjoyed his most successful track and field season ever. Connor retained his Fife and Scottish cross country, track and field titles and recorded a series of first places in invitation athletics meets.

Kieran Steer

Kieran Steer from Crossgates made an impressive return to international boccia in Scottish colours at the Czech International Open in 2019. Kieran was paired with fellow Scot Ross Munro and finished in a creditable fourth position in the pairs competition. The Scots defeated Germany and Czech Republic but lost out to a second Czech team during qualification. Eventually the Scots lost out to Germany in the bronze medal match.

In the individual competition, Kieran topped his qualifying group with three wins in a tough section. Kieran’s scores were 8-1, 3-2 and 10-1. At the quarter final stage Kieran lost out to an opponent whom he reckoned “deserved to win”.
Later in the year Kieran was selected for Team Scotland to compete in Nottingham at an international competition involving teams from England and Scotland. Kieran displayed the skills and confidence that earned him a place in Team GB for the Rio Paralympic Games. Along with his partner Scott, Kieran won the BC4 pairs gold medal.

These international experiences, return to the national boccia squad and a competition in Northern Ireland have confirmed that Kieran is on the way back to the highest levels of performance boccia in the UK. Kieran learned recently that he is included in the 2020 Scottish boccia squad along with young Tyler McLelland from Windygates. Kieran has influenced and inspired Tyler enormously since he started playing three years ago. For the first time ever Disability Sport Fife has two players in the national boccia squad.

Callum Sloan

Callum Sloan from Dunfermline recorded PBs in 100m (19.6), 400m (78.9) and 800m (2.58) at the Muller Para-track Grand Prix at Kirkby, Liverpool. Callum is coached by DSF lead athletics coach Pamela Robson and supported by DSF athletics coach Gayle Sloan.

In 2019 Callum headed south once again for the London mini marathon and recorded a personal best time. The event is held as part of the Virgin Money London Marathon. Callum is the only junior wheelchair racer from Fife ever to compete in the mini marathon.

Callum was a member of the Disability Sport Fife Sportshall team that retained the national title in 2019. Callum enjoyed another successful year in wheelchair track racing at the Disability Sport Fife Track and Field Championships at Pitreavie, SDS Track and Field Championships at Grangemouth and invitation meets throughout Scotland. Callum retained his status as the country’s leading junior T53 wheelchair track athlete.

Wheelchair racers and handcyclists headed to Jedburgh in October for the Annual Jed Renilson 10km. The event is organised by Borders Disability Sport and is supported by Scottish Athletics and Scottish Disability Sport. Callum (T53) competed in the race for the first time and was third Scot across the line in 41.47 for a personal best by 1.37. Coach Pamela Robson was pleased with Callum’s performance, considering he hit a pothole at 5km and his steering was all over the place for the final half of the race.

Cameron Adam

Cameron Adam from Dunfermline and Fife AC is one of Scotland’s leading junior Para athletes. Last year Cameron competed in his first British Championships for athletes with cerebral palsy in Doncaster and returned with two PBs and two silver medals. Competing in the T37 class, Cameron recorded 16.2 for 100m and 34.6 for 200m. Cameron also competed in shot and had a best throw of 6.1m. This was Cameron’s first entry into the British Championships and he performed exceptionally well. The opportunity to compete against other athletes with cerebral palsy was very inspiring.
In 2019 Cameron was Fife’s leading ambulant junior track and field athlete with a succession of wins at the Fife Championships and invitation meets around Scotland.

Cameron was a member of the Disability Sport Fife Sportshall team that retained the national title in 2019. Cameron’s progress as a sprinter and thrower has been significant under the guidance of Steve Doig at Fife AC and Disability Sport Fife lead athletics coach Pamela Robson.

Glen Livingston

Glen Livingston achieved something very special at the 2019 SDS Lawn Bowls Championships at the Westburn Park in Aberdeen be winning and retaining the open men’s singles championship for physically disabled bowlers on his first two attempts. Glen from Cowdenbeath Bowling Club is a relative newcomer to Disability Sport Fife (DSF) but in no time he has made an impact. Glen is following in the footsteps of other outstanding Fife Para bowlers and has his sights set on representing Scotland at the 2020 IBD World Championships in New Zealand at the end of the year.

Glen was introduced to bowls as a 16 year old at Tanshall BC in Glenrothes. After two years he moved to Coalton of Balgonie BC where he played for 10 years before moving to Buckhaven Bowling Club in the mid 90s. From 2002 – 2005 Glen was working in Kent and playing indoor bowls for Kent County. A move back to Glenrothes in 2005 resulted in him playing outdoors at Cowdenbeath BC and indoors at East Fife Indoor Bowling Club and Abbeyview Bowling Club.
Glen has an impressive history in mainstream bowls including membership of the East Fife indoor team that won the under 35s title two years in a row. Watching the Para bowls triples competition at the Commonwealth Games in Australia had a major influence on Glen’s decision to put himself forward for consideration for a parallel career in Para bowls. A call up for the national Para bowls squad soon followed.

As a member of Team Fife Glen started 2019 perfectly with a win in the men’s open section for physically disabled players at the Scottish Disability Sport Carpet Bowls Championships. In 2019 Glen returned from the Home Nations competition in Cardiff where Scotland defeated Wales twice, lost to England twice and had to settle for the runners up position. Glen and Billy Allan from Fife won three from four matches as part of the Scottish triple and collected valuable points for Team Scotland.

Glen is already established as one of Scotland’s leading Para bowlers. As well as the IBD World Championships Glen will be trying to gain selection for the Bowls Scotland Para bowls team that will travel to Potters in Great Yarmouth for the 2020 Home Nations.

Pamela Mitchell

Pamela Mitchell from Dunfermline and Headwell BC has been Scotland’s leading indoor and outdoor lady bowler with a learning disability for over 30 years. In 2019 however she enjoyed one of her most successful seasons indoor and out to date.

At the start of the year Pamela won the Scottish Disability Sport Indoor singles title for the third year in succession at Falkirk Indoor BC and then went on to retain her Fife title at East Fife Indoor BC in September.

The Munro Cup is a new competition between the Home Nations involving players with learning disabilities. Pamela and Darryl Stewart from Cowdenbeath BC were selected for Team Scotland and although England won the competition narrowly, Pamela had an outstanding tournament.

Pamela retained her Fife Lawn Bowls title at the Beveridge Park BC in June and then helped Team Fife to retain the Inter Area team title with two wins from three in Musselburgh. Team Fife has dominated the inter Area competition since it was set up seven years ago and Pamela has been the outstanding lady bowler during that period. Pamela rounded off her outstanding year in outdoor Para bowls by winning the SDS National Lawn Bowls single hand competition for bowlers with learning disabilities at the Westburn Park in Aberdeen in September.

As well as success in indoor and outdoor disability bowls Pamela continues to thrive as a Headwell BC mainstream club representative in ladies indoor and outdoor competitions. Headwell BC prides itself on promoting inclusive practice and Pamela is the outstanding example of Headwell’s inclusive ethos in action. Pamela is part of the Headwell BC ladies team that has reached the national indoor semi finals. What a year for an outstanding Para bowler.

2020 Fife Sports Festival off to a Flying Start

All went well earlier today at the Disability Sport Fife (DSF) Swimming Championships held at the Michael Woods Sports & Leisure Centre in Glenrothes. The Championships are supported by Fife Sports and Leisure Trust and the Association of Fife Rotary Clubs. In attendance throughout the day to present medals were Alan Farquarson (chairman), Derek Thomson and Anne Tait of the Association of Fife Rotary Clubs.
200 swimmers with physical, sensory or learning disabilities registered for the championships and enjoyed 5 hours of competitive swimming. Timekeeping responsibilities were in the hands of Sports Leaders from Kirkcaldy HS backed up by a superb small team of officials from Glenrothes Amateur Swimming Club. DSF had a strong team of volunteers on the poolside looking after mustering, presentations and administration. A most enjoyable day was had by all.
Aileen Brown (Central Fife CSS) and Wayne Sammut (West Fife CSS) were the winners of the men’s and women’s trophy races for the leading swimmers in the Community Support Services. West Fife CSS retained the Anne H Brodie team trophy and the Sonia Kane Memorial Trophy.
Ten Fife secondary schools with departments for pupils with additional support needs contested the inter schools trophy. Woodmill HS from Dunfemline (50 points) retained the trophy ahead of Lochgelly HS (41 points) and Madras College St Andrews (39 points).
Throughout the day there were many fine individual performances. Cerys Venters Scott (Carnegie Swimming Club) and Shaun Rowcliffe (Glenrothes Amateur Swimming Club) were the leading senior swimmers with a learning disability. Cameron Hay from John Fergus School caught the eye in the junior boys races and recorded excellent times in 100m freestyle and 50m backstroke in particular.
Cameron Hemphill, Katie Pake and Kerys Ballard from Carnegie SC were the leading physically disabled swimmers and newcomer Maddison Phillips from Glenrothes SC in her first championships caught the eye. DSF was delighted to welcome back former Scottish squad member Ross Keatings after many years away from the sport. Fife College students were back on the programme for the first time in many years and the pupils from Kirkcaldy HS DAS won their first ever swimming medal.
Rotarians Alan and Derek appear in the photo with West Fife swimmers at the conclusion of the championships.

WCA Friendship Trophy 2020

The annual Friendship Trophy competition was held in the National Curling Academy,Stirling, on Saturday 15th February.

Ten wheelchair curlers from the south of Scotland took on 10 wheelchair curlers from the north. The format of two pairs and two triples from each consists of experienced players and not so experienced players.

A good day’s curling was had by all, with the south of Scotland teams taking the trophy.

The trophy was presented to team captain John McClelland by Mr Neil Mcgarva, A M Ross Family Foundation. John thanked Mr Mcgarva for his continued support of this competition and all the players for taking part, the umpires, ice men and on ice volunteers for making this event possible.

Once the presentation was over everyone enjoyed a lovely dinner in the curlers’ lounge within The Peak Sports Village.

SDS Sportshall Athletics Event 2020

A fantastic day of athletics was had as the Grangemouth Sports Complex saw 11 teams from around Scotland descend on it to participate in multiple athletic-disciplines. This was the first year the event ran in partnership with UK Sportshall organisation alongside our usual partners scottishathletics. The event is designed to be an introductory competitive outlet for those athletes at the first stages of enjoying the sport, many of who have qualified for this event by participating in local and regional events and have been selected to represent their branch area. Teams are asked to select athletes from all disability disciplines to be eligible for the trophy which is awarded to the team who collect the most points throughout the day. SDS were delighted with the attendance and it is heartening to see that strong development is being encouraged in such an important sport.

There were some slight changes to the format and order of the event as it assimilated with the typical Sportshall format ran up and down the country. Team Fife once again took home the trophy with the team performing superbly across all disciplines. Fife have put a lot of work into developing their run, jump and throw sessions in the area and all this practice clearly is bearing fruit as the youngsters excelled on the day with Dumfries and Galloway and Highland in hot pursuit but ultimately finishing in the second and third positions respectively. All participants and team support should be applauded as they all contributed to a special atmosphere at the event as the sport proved to be the real winner.

A big thank-you should go to Adam Burgess, the Senior Development Officer for Sportshall and to Harry Baird, the scottishathletics Sportshall co-ordinator for their extensive contribution both before and during the event.

The excellent partnership continues with Barclays and West Lothian College with both organisations providing tremendous voluntary support to this event along with the usual excellent volunteers from the local athletics clubs Forth Valley Flyers.

Don’t forget the National Cross Country Event at Bellahouston on Thursday 19th March. If you would still like to participate in this event please let us know at events@scottishdisabilitysport.com.

Education Scotland Supports Boccia Development in Fife

Three boccia sets were presented to three Fife schools at the Michael Woods Sports & Leisure Centre by the Vice Chair of Scottish Disability Sport, Claire Morrison.
The boccia sets were funded by Education Scotland and purchased by Scottish Disability Sport (SDS). SDS Boccia Development Officer Madison Garland has been working with Disability Sport Fife to encourage more players into the sport. Part of the project has involved the allocation of equipment to Fife schools engaged in the programme.
At the conclusion of the annual Boccia Leaders Award workshop organised by Disability Sport Fife and supported by the Celtic FC Foundation through SDS, the boccia sets were handed over by Claire. Claire lives in Dalgety Bay and is Performance Coach with Boccia UK, with years of experience in tutoring courses and coaching high performance players.
The school staff who received the equipment and recorded their thanks to Education Scotland and Scottish Disability Sport were Audrey Davies and Sandy MacIntosh (Queen Anne HS, Dunfermline); Jennifer Imrie and Billy Naismith (Kirkcaldy HS); Stuart Munn (Madras College, St Andrews).
All three schools are active members of Disability Sport Fife and their representatives have committed to supporting the addition of a Fife inter schools boccia competition to the Fife calendar of events. Players who use manual or power wheelchairs are the target audience. Watch this space.

Overall the S3-S6 positions are Balwearie HS 1st, Lochgelly HS 2nd and Queen Anne HS 3rd with one round still to play. The top two teams in the senior competition will represent Fife at the National Championships organised by the Scottish FA and Scottish Disability Sport. Ryan Baird from Lochgelly HS is the top scorer with 14 goals. Also taking part in the League were the pupils from Woodmill HS and Madras College.

Disability Sport Fife (DSF) is indebted to the Scottish FA for the grant it received this year to develop football opportunities for players with additional support needs. DSF is also indebted to referees

Andrew McGachan and Tommy Roberts plus Secretary Derek Lowe from Fife Referees Association for support of the 7s League since its inception.

In attendance and offering support were DSF partners Lee Bailey and Davie Honeyman (Fife Council/Scottish FA Football Development Officers), Matthew Solomons (Pars Foundation) and Paul Greig (Raith Rovers). The delivery of football in Fife for players with additional support needs involves all the key key agencies and most importantly it is inclusive in ethos and practice.
