DAY ONE

Day one was jam packed with action and adventure as the red team tried watersports, archery and ice hockey.

After arrival, lunch was scoffed before driving down to Loch Insch Outdoor Centre to try the activities. First up on the agenda for the red team was watersports. The team climbed into canoes and took to the water.

Team leader Kathryn said: “Everyone was on the water and had a lot of good fun, working really well as a team which was really nice to see.”

It was also quite a special moment for Isla who got to experience some sailing!

After archery, there was the opportunity to try some ice hockey on the outdoor ‘rink’. Again, this proved to be a lot of fun but for those who didn’t feel quite up for it, they decided to play a game of boccia with some members of the green team.  Two young boys with canoe paddles playing on the sand

DAY TWO

Day two saw everyone take on the legendary SDS summer camp expedition. This year, the route traversed through the forest before passing by a beach of Loch Morlich ahead of looping back to Glenmore Lodge.

As usual, the route provided a fair few obstacles and challenges but the red team thrived and worked together to complete the expedition.

Team leader, Kathryn, was very impressed with all of the participants; working well as a team, using the slings to push and pull wheelchairs over some very rough terrain.

Although the rough route was to be expected, a wasp sting certainly wasn’t! Poor Leo experienced his first ever wasp sting, which got him right on his ear. Despite the shock, “he carried on and was a great trooper. He even ended up walking in the last bit [of the expedition] as well, which was really good,” said Kathryn.

The SDS Young Persons’ Sport Panel Administrator, Hollie, was also a member of the red team. They saw the red team put in a lot of effort and thought that it was great to see Teegan up and out of her hair, doing a little bit of walking.

Furthermore, Ian did amazingly well to complete the expedition by only using his walker. He did say at the start that he wanted to get to the end without using a chair and he did this seemingly effortlessly. What a trooper!

A top moment for Hollie was: “From a panel (YPSP) perspective we are young people supporting each other and role modelling for each other and today, I saw a lot of examples of young people helping other young people. This was really great.”

Well done, red team!
