PB for Young Fife Athlete in Mini Marathon

Congratulations and well done to teenager Callum Sloan (T53) from Dunfermline and Queen Anne HS who recorded a personal best time of 0:20:55 in the 2018 Virgin Money Giving Mini London Marathon on Sunday 22nd April.

Supported by his family, coach Pamela Robson and her family, the young Disability Sport Fife member was competing in the Under 17 boys section for the first time. Previous involvement has been in the under 14 boys section.

Conditions were excellent and athlete and coach were delighted with how Callum had performed. All those training sessions on Kirkcaldy prom, the Beveridge Park and Pitreavie Athletics Centre had paid off.

Callum is still the only junior wheelchair athlete from Fife to compete the London Mini wheelchair marathon. Young Callum has been an inspiration to the senior and junior wheelchair athletes who now make up the ever expanding Fife wheelchair racing squad.

First Time National Victory for Glenrothes Strollers

History was made at the Scottish Disability Sport/Scottish FA national football 5s on Wednesday 18th April at Glasgow Green.

Glenrothes Strollers Football Club lifted the premiership award for the first time and became the first Disability Sport Fife member organisation in almost four decades to win a top honour in the open section at any national football championships.

This achievement cannot be underestimated and is fitting reward for a club that has made a significant commitment to football for players with additional support needs over many years. Glenrothes Strollers are fully inclusive in ethos and action.

Team members were: Lloyd Simpson, Cameron Page, Steven Anderson, Stephen Young, Daniel Henderson and Robert Anderson. The Strollers accumulated 12 points and won on goal difference after one of the closest finishes in the history of the championships.

Glenrothes Strollers also entered a team in the Championship section and finished in sixth position. Team members were: Ross Page, David Mair, Dale Lynch, Craig Wight, Scott Todd, Graham Telfer, Branden Seath and James Cunningham.

The success of the Strollers is undoubtedly due to the competencies of their coaching team and the commitment throughout the club to inclusive practice. Glenrothes Strollers have an ambitious and enthusiastic team of volunteers at the top of the club and it was only a matter of time before the club brought back a major honour to Fife. Well done the Strollers.

Disability Sport Fife, Glenrothes Strollers and Fife Sports and Leisure Trust are offering coaching for juniors 12 – 16 with additional support needs on Saturday mornings at the Michael Woods sports and Leisure Centre. Interested? Contact Disability Sport Fife.

Inclusive Swimming Gala Success

Inverurie Rotary Swimming Gala

A historical Grampian gala has once again proven the worth and success of inclusive swimming.

This year’s annual Rotary Gala, held in Inverurie, attracted 60 swimmers from ages 8 to 50+ of all abilities and disabilities including swimmers from the local clubs, and their families and friends. The Gala (a participatory event) has been supported by the Rotary Club of Inverurie for many years and was originally set up to combine swimmers from St Andrew’s School (an ASN school based in Inverurie) and Garioch Amateur Swimming Club.

St Andrew’s School no longer enters a team into the Gala thanks to discrete provision for disabled swimmers now being offered by the Swimming Club. Garioch Gators now caters for the needs of swimmers with physical, sensory and learning disabilities in the area.

Retired swimmers are also invited to the event, and this year, featured its first retired Gators swimmer, Scott Walker, who had completed a mammoth 150 mile cycle the previous day!

Well done to all of the swimmers and a special thanks to Pauline Stirling and her team for organising such a great event!

If you, or anyone you know, lives in Grampian with a physical, sensory or learning disability and is keen to get involved in Para Sport, please contact Alison Shaw on alison.shaw@scottishdisabilitysport.com or on 07828 744 848
