Para Sport Festival 2018 – Event Information

Fife AC Quartet in Form at Stirling 10K

Congratulations to all four Disability Sport Fife athletes who are members of Fife AC and were competing at the City of Stirling 10k at the weekend. The Stirling 10K also incorporates the Scottish Championships.

It was a tough run in very blustery conditions. All athletes found the occasion a massive challenge but stuck to the task in hand and of course all successfully completed the course. As Derek Rae was quick to point out in true and honest fashion the conditions were the same for everybody.

Derek went into the race feeling in excellent shape and knowing that the block of training he had just completed had set him up for the challenge ahead. Derek’s main focus is on the 2018 Glasgow Half Marathon and the Stirling run has set him up perfectly for that great occasion. Derek has three more weeks of hard intensive training then after Glasgow he is looking forward to an easier week or two which will be most welcome and of course is well deserved. Derek recorded a time of 32.14 which is a personal best of around 18 seconds. Derek is coached by Ron Morrison at Fife AC.

The remaining trio of Fife AC athletes completed their runs as follows: Owen Miller – 34.16, Sam Fernando – 34.48, Carter Taylor – 38.03. There were 163 starters in Stirling and DSF is fiercely proud of the performances of all four representatives. Owen and Carter are coached by Steve Doig at Fife AC and Sam Fernando by Ron Morrison. The partnership between DSF and Fife AC is very special and continues to produce excellent inclusive initiatives.

Gareloch RDA New Carriage Driving Arena

The Gareloch RDA is happy to announce the grand opening of our new carriage driving arena. The arena was officially opened on Friday 31st August following months of fundraising spearheaded by Ian Ward. The group thanks each and every person and organization that helped to make this dream a reality.

The new arena has been designed to allow riders to learn how to drive a horse led carriage. The group’s specialist pony, Bobbie, has spent a year in training for this new activity, while the specially designed carriage will be with the group by the end of September. By bringing this new activity to Gareloch RDA, we can enable a far broader base of riders to learn how to interact and work with the horses.

Team work, learning and fun are all central to the Gareloch RDA ethos, our new arena will not only enable more people to interact with a new sport, but enable volunteers to learn a whole new skill, as well as giving back to our community. For more information please contact us on the details below.

Forth Carriage Driving Group RDA Know How to Party

The Forth Carriage Group went to Muiravonside Country Park for their annual picnic drive.

First time to this lovely park with lots to see from the carriages. Thanks go to Wendy for organizing a very successful day and to the rest to the team for all the hard work beforehand and on the day!

Our new signs looked great and are a good addition to our safety when we are out and about – the pictures show it all!

Superb Inclusive Bowls Developments in Fife

Disability Sport Fife enjoys very special relationships with Dovecot Bowling Club and Headwell Bowling Club. Action for change initiatives that were prompted by GOGA in Fife (Get Out Get Active) have blossomed into regular bowls coaching and competition opportunities for a significant number of players with additional support needs.

Dovecot Bowling Club was well represented in the men’s open section at the recent Fife Indoor Championships at the East Fife Indoor Club at Aberhill. Headwell Bowling Club hosted a very successful Sunday inclusive open day recently and was well represented for the first time at the Fife Indoor Championships. Club members won three titles on their first visit.

In Disability Sport Fife we believe it takes “champions” to bring about change and make things happen. Mike Mowat is the man behind the Dovecot project and Alyn Steedman and Chris Osborne are the driving forces behind the developments at Headwell. Also heavily involved of course are the club members within each club. In the case of the Headwell project, Disability Sport Fife pays tribute to the brilliant support staff from West Fife Community Support Services who have been critical to this inclusive sports development.

Most Successful Championships at East Fife Indoor

For 25 years in September the East Fife Indoor Bowling Club in Aberhill has played host to the Disability Sport Fife Indoor Championships for bowlers with learning disabilities.

The 2018 Championships included four singles sections for men and two for women and attracted the largest entry in the history of the event. 74 ties were contested over five hours and all were expertly overseen by volunteer markers from bowling clubs within Central Fife, coordinated by Math Thomson from Beveridge Park BC.

Spectators could not have asked for a more exciting finish to the 2018 Championships. Past Scottish Champions Craig Donaldson from Central Fife CSS/Kinghorn BC and Darryl Stewart from Broad St BC qualified for the final of the men’s open after winning all their matches in each of the two qualifying sections. Seeded one and two, their match was always going to be close and going in to the final end Darryl held a three shot lead. Playing some of his best bowls of the year, Craig was lying three but with his final delivery, released an outstanding bowl to win the tie 6 – 5 and lift the Fife Indoor title. The fast improving Anderson brothers from Dovecot BC in Glenrothes finished runners up in each of their qualifying sections and were awarded third place trophies.

The final of the equivalent open section for Fife’s leading women bowlers involved top seeds Pamela Mitchell from Headwell BC and Wendy Thomson from East Fife CSS/St Andrews BC. Pamela is the outstanding indoor bowler in Fife and current Scottish Champion. Pamela demonstrated her superiority indoors with convincing wins throughout the Championships. A highlight of this section was the emergence of West Fife CSS/Headwell BC bowler Nikki Baxter in the top flight of women’s indoor bowls in Fife.

The men’s B section final involved two bowlers from East Fife CSS, Craig Houston and Craig Bernard. Both bowlers were unbeaten in qualification and Craig Houston won the title with a 7 – 2 final victory. Ryan Peterson from East Fife CSS dropped only one match in qualification and was the pick of the remaining bowlers in the B section.

The men’s C section qualifiers were newcomer Tristen Rankin from West Fife CSS/Headwell BC and Fergus Wilson from West Fife CSS/Lumphinnans BC. Fergus narrowly won their qualifying tie by one shot but in the final it was all Tristen from the start and he ran out a very worthy winner and collected his first Fife bowls title.

The men’s D section qualifiers for the final were Kevin Rowe and Fraser Brown from West Fife CSS/Headwell BC. Kevin lost one match to George Goodsir from East Fife CSS and Fraser lost one match to Kieron Scott from East Fife CSS during qualification but both bowlers qualified for the final on count back of shots. In the final newcomer Fraser was the in form bowler and won his first Fife title by 7 -1.

West Fife CSS/Headell BC members rounded of a magnificent 2018 Fife Indoor Championships by providing the finalists in the women’s B section. Carrie Ann Smith qualified for the final with four straight wins including a victory over team mate Erin Smith by only one shot (3-2). Danielle had three wins from four, losing to Carrie Anne 8-0. In the final event of the championships, Danielle reversed the result and won theFife B title by 4-2.

The emergence of West Fife CSS/Headwell BC as a force in bowls in Fife was the highlight of the 2018 DSF Championships at the East Fife Indoor Club. Many of the new bowlers will add strength to the Fife team for the 2019 Inter Area Championships. Dovecot BC members similarly had a significant presence in the men’s open section specifically. Craig Donaldson, Darryl Stewart and Pamela Mitchell are the most experienced of Fife’s indoor bowlers and undoubtedly are the most talented. Without juniors participating, DSF had an entry of around 45 players for the 2018 Indoor Championships. Disability bowls in Fife goes from strength to strength and the influence of the developments within clubs in Fife grows in significance each year.

Scotland Claim Silver Medal at the UK School Games

The Scottish Junior Wheelchair Basketball side achieved a podium finish for the second year running at the 2018 School Games, held over the weekend Thursday 30th August to Sunday 1st September at Loughborough.  The Scotland under 19 side bettered last season’s result and claimed a second place finish.

The Young Scots came up against a strong England North side who were littered with experienced players which proved a reach too far and they ultimately lost 64 – 41 after leading going into the 2nd quarter.  James Beattie (CWSC Panthers) top scored in the final, claiming more than half of Scotland’s overall points.  There were also notable performances from Josh Manson (Tees Valley Titans), who captained the junior side at his last School Games, and Rhys Colliar (Dundee Dragons) who was pivotal in ensuring a close run match.

The Scotland youngsters had made it through the tournament without defeat until the final and were part of, arguably, the game of the Championships – claiming a 2 point victory over Wales (48 – 46).  The young Scots also had previously defeated Northern Ireland (67 – 46) on day 1 and England Central (55 – 45) on day 2.

This year’s results created history as three Celtic Nations qualified for the semi-final stage of the competition.  This builds on the result achieved by Scotland last year who were the first Celtic Nation to achieve a podium finish at the School Games – this is testament to the development work being undertaken in the countries.

The School Games National Finals, supported by National Lottery Funding from Sport England and delivered by the Youth Sport Trust, is a major multi-sport event for the most talented young athletes across the UK.  More than 1400 young competed across 11 sports, five of which include disability competition, at venues across Loughborough University Campus.

Now in its 13th year, the School Games provides a fun, competitive and safe environment for our sports stars of the future to gain experience at a large, multi-sport event.
