FVDS: # Volunteers Week

The tireless work of Forth Valley Disability Sport volunteers allows our organisation to grow stronger every year.

As this week Thursday 1st June to Wednesday 7th June 2017 is Volunteers Week, FVDS would like to take this opportunity to thank all the volunteers involved within disability sport across the Forth Valley area.

FVDS greatly appreciates your support and commitment week in week out at events, classes, clubs, on our board and youth committees.

Without the support of well over 100 volunteers FVDS and its partners would not be able to organise, deliver, promote or fund the sporting and physical activities we offer.

Once again thank you to you all.

If you wish to get involved in Forth Valley Disability Sport or would like more information on the opportunities FVDS offers in the Forth Valley area please do not hesitate to contact FVDS on info@fvds.org.uk or Tel: 01786 466486

Fife AC Para athletes in top form in Glasgow

Three Fife AC Para athletes made an immense impact at the British Miler Club (BMC) Regional Races at Scotstoun on Friday 2nd June. All three set personal best performances and sent out a clear message to track opponents that they may have limited experience over 3K but they are a force to be reckoned with.

Owen Miller from Dunfermline competes in the T20 class and is coached by Steve Doig. Owen is a specialist 1500 metres runner and his time of 9.08.37 was a track PB over 3K and the best of the three Fife AC stars.

Sam Fernando from Gateside is ranked one in the T20 class under 20 and his time of 9.10.40 was a track PB by over 9 seconds. Derek Rae from Kirkcaldy is ranked one for 1500 metres through to the marathon in the T46 class and this was his first track outing over the 3K distance. Derek finished 7th overall in 9.19.98. Sam and Derek are coached by Ron Morrison.

All three athletes will be competing against one another once again on Wednesday 14th June at the Disability Sport Fife (DSF) Track and Field Championships at Pitreavie. Early signs are that this will be the best attended DSF championships with almost 100 track events.

Kilmaron Win AH Brodie Trophy

Kilmaron swimmers produced an upset result at the 2017 Brodie Gala at Cupar Pool when they finished strongly to lift the AH Brodie Cup for the thirteenth time and denied the pupils from John Fergus School the chance of making it three wins in a row.

The Brodie Gala is organised by Disability Sport Fife and supported by the Fife Sports and Leisure Trust and involves swimmers with severe and complex needs. For the past two years Rimbleton Primary School pupils with additional support needs have also taken part.

At the end of two hours of competition Kilmaron pupils were crowned Inter School Champions with 32 points, 10 ahead of John Fergus, with Calaiswood and Hyndhead sharing third place.

John Fergus School produced the two outstanding swimmers of the day in Cameron Hay and Danielle Young who won 50m back and front plus the boys and girls Trophy Races. Luuk Vellenturf was the outstanding Primary pupil with 50m wins on back and front.

Kilmaron sealed their win when they came first in the Inter Schools relay and Rimbleton Tigers defeated Rimbleton Panthers to win the Primary relay.

Race winners were:

John Fergus :Cameron Hay, Danielle Young, Zahra Ahmed, Lauren Fraczek,

Kilmaron: Madeleine Dias, Brandon Thom, Hayley Carmichael, Aiden Hutchison, Cameron Brunton, Bobby Lockkart, Kyle Hughes

Hyndhead: Jonathan Rollins,

Calaiswood: Finlay Jack

Rimbleton Primary: Elliot Smart, Luke McGurk, Luuk Vellenturf, Tia Cheney, Jayden McLellan,

It is traditional for the schools to have a picnic on the grass outside the Cupar Pool and fortunately this year was no exception.

Para Bowlers prepare for Multi-Nations

The Scottish Para Bowls Squad landed in Gold Coast Australia four days ahead of the 8 Nations and Para Sport Event, which is due to start on Sunday 4 June at Broadbeach Bowls Club.  The event has a bearing on Commonwealth Games qualification.

Our early arrival time has allowed for four solid days of practice on the lightning quick surfaces, in which the players must adapt to have any chance of success.  These sessions have enabled coaches to assess the players prior to making team selections ahead of the competition starting.  Scotland are in the fortunate position to have two teams competing in the event, meaning that more of our bowlers are able to experience competitive matches in these conditions, against the top physically disabled and visually impaired bowlers in the world.

On the final day of training a warm up match was arranged with hosts, Australia, to enable all players to have a competitive match ahead of the event itself.  This proved invaluable in our preparations.  Australia will go into the event as heavy favourites.
