Ryan Peterson holding trophy

A Fine Fife All Rounder

Ryan Peterson from St Andrews is a very committed all round athlete. In swimming in particular he has been very successful and his record in local and national competitions is very impressive. As recently as two weeks ago Ryan represented East Fife Community Support Services in the Trophy Race at the Disability Sport Fife (DSF) swimming championships and finished in first place. This result identified Ryan as the leading swimmer within the three Community Support Services in 2017. Ryan is currently coached by DSF coach Kathy Bijak.

Over the years Ryan has demonstrated a love for physical activity, including sport.  He has always been encouraged to be active by his parents, Dalgairn Centre and now East Fife Community Support Services staff. Ryan is an enthusiastic footballer and athlete and he enjoys competing for East Fife CSS in DSF competitions. Each week Ryan attends the weekly multi sport session at the Michael Woods Sports and Leisure Centre in Glenrothes. Whether the activity is basketball, badminton, tug of war, carpet bowls, unihoc, football or fitness activities Ryan offers one hundred per cent as he has done since he first became involved with DSF.

A few years ago DSF became involved with St Andrews Bowling Club because the club was going through a major refurbishment and new build. The club has always had a strong commitment to inclusive practice and Wendy Thomson from St Andrews took the opportunity to become a member. Wendy is a past Fife and Scottish disability bowls champion and a key member of the DSF bowls squad. Like Ryan (2005), Wendy (2008) is a member of East Fife CSS and a previous winner of the Rotary Club of St Andrews Sports Personality of the Year Award. Like Wendy, Ryan has now become a member of St Andrews Bowling Club and is playing there twice a week. Ryan has taken up bowls seriously and there is no doubt he will master the skills quickly as he has with all the other activities he has mastered over the years.

DSF is proud to be associated with St Andrews Bowling Club which is one of many clubs across Fife fully committed to inclusive practice. Wendy is a key member of the DSF bowls squad and it will not be too long before Ryan steps up to the plate and puts himself in contention for a place in the Fife Team for the Inter Area Bowls championship for players with a learning disability.

West Parasport Festival – March 2017

The 8th West Parasport Festival took place once again at Ravenscraig Regional Facility on Friday 10th March.  Over 40 pupils with a physical disability and/or visual impairment took part in various sports throughout the day, all delivered by local clubs, volunteers and governing bodies, and assisted by some prominent athletes from their respective sports.

This event is one of numerous activities funded by the Celtic FC Foundation ‘Inspiring Sport’ Project, and we thank them for their continued partnership.    Inspiring Sport aims to enhance the lives of young people and adults with physical, learning and sensory disabilities in the West of Scotland through the medium of sport and physical activity and through various means, encourages participation which is beneficial for a healthy lifestyle and social interaction.

The event was a great success with all of the young people fully involved in athletics, boccia, bowls, basketball, cycling, football, table tennis, tennis and rowing, which were based on fun and enjoyment which hopefully encourages future participation in the sports.

Thanks must go to Ayrshire College students, Active Schools coordinators from West Local Authorities, the many volunteers who assisted on the day, and the sports centre for their continued support.

Bronze for Scotland at World Wheelchair Curling Championships

Norway won the World Wheelchair Curling Championships 2017 gold medals and world title for the third time on Saturday 11th March in the Gangneung Curling Centre in Gangneung, Republic of Korea. Russia took silver while Scotland won the bronze medals.

In the bronze medal match Scotland – skipped by Aileen Neilson, with third Gregor Ewan, second Hugh Nibloe, lead Robert McPherson and alternate Angie Malone – fell four shots behind China in the second end before fighting back to secure a 9-5 victory and the bronze medals.

Scotland skip, Aileen Neilson said after the win; “It’s a bit surreal to be honest. Having come off from losing in the 1v2 game to Russia, and then to Norway [in semi-final] we knew we had to come back out here and fight. After giving up the four that was a big ask but it just shows the real dynamics we have in our team. We stuck together and we didn’t let it go until the very last stone was thrown. We’ve lost big ends before and managed to fight back – it’s about not letting that get to you. There are ups and there are downs but it’s how you cope with them. And I think we fought back after the losses. You learn more from the games you lose than the games you win. We have gained so much experience in having come back from the qualifiers to come back and medal. It’s just fantastic. I’m really, really pleased.”

The 10 teams competing at the Wheelchair Curling Championships 2017 in Gangneung, Republic of Korea have all earned Paralympic Qualification Points to be in qualifying positions for the 2018 Paralympic Winter Games.

Twelve teams will compete at the Games. With points gathered across the past three World Wheelchair Curling Championships the Member Associations who have earned enough Paralympic Qualification Points are: Canada, China, Finland, Germany, Norway, Russia, Scotland (Great Britain), Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland, USA and hosts Korea.

This year’s World Championships also doubled as a test event for PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games being held between 9th and 18th March 2018, as the wheelchair curling will be returning to the Gangneung Curling Centre during the games.

There will be no wheelchair world championship next year (2018) as the Championships are not held in Winter Paralympic Games years. The World Wheelchair Curling Championships 2019 will take place in Stirling, Scotland between 2nd and 8th March 2019.

Orkney Action

It was a busy two days up in the Orkney Islands last weekend for tutors Charlie Forbes and Fiona Green.

After a pleasant drive from Inverness and bumpy ferry crossing it was right into the classroom to deliver to 18 participants on the Friday evening.

There was a great mix from PE staff to leisure centre staff, NHS support staff, coaches and volunteers which made for an interesting evening.

The following day was the Family Fun Day for young disabled people with a good range of sports on offer from boccia, badminton and climbing wall being the most popular. There were a lot of families present and some have now planned to get together along with some others to try and get a young sports group up and running.

A meeting is planned on the next visit in about May/June.

InCAS – a Truly Inclusive Fife Swimming Club

Disability Sport Fife (DSF) is proud of the many partnerships it enjoys with sports clubs across Fife. InCAS (Inverkeithing Competitive Amateur swimmers) was established in 1975 and from its inception there has always been a strong inclusive ethos throughout the club. A number of swimmers with physical impairments or learning disabilities have made their mark in national and international Para swimming because of the InCAS approach to inclusive performance coaching and training.

Currently five of InCAS 65 performance swimmers have a physical impairment or learning disability. Four are currently members of the DSF swim team, two train with the Scottish Disability Sport swim squad and one is attached to the GB Para-academy programmme.

InCAS Head Coach Garrie Roberts has enjoyed considerable success in Para swimming and mainstream swimming over many years with Fife clubs. Garrie has been a Commonwealth Games Coach as well as coaching Paralympic and World Championship medalists Paul Noble, Lara Ferguson, Rebecca Lee, Paul Johnston and Andrew Lindsay. Garrie has also been involved with GB Youth European team members and Commonwealth Games members Bryan Morgan and Lynn McLaren.

InCAS members believe strongly that the word “family” best describes the reason for their success as a strong inclusive club. The club is run entirely by parents and other volunteers. As swimmers progress through squads there is a parallel parental committee progression. Fresh blood and new ideas are encouraged and actively sought, while at the same time maintaining the InCAS commitment to affordable and accessible swimming for all. Swimmers with different impairments are not assigned to a specific InCAS session but blended throughout the club at times appropriate to their ability. The InCAS club is committed to all members regardless of ability.

InCAS members are proud of their rich history as the local swimming club based at the Inverkeithing HS Community Use swimming pool. The “Wing” is where the first Fife disability swimming club was based and under Jean Wilson’s guidance William McQueen made it to the Paralympic podium. It is not recognised as one of the most advanced training settings but it is where a number of Fife’s most talented swimmers started out – Tain Bruce, Rebecca Lee, Lucy Ellis, Eloise Barbour are identified among the alumni. The Inverkeithing pool is shorter and narrower than most and learners feel less overwhelmed and considerably safer when moving from lessons to club training. InCAS members are well respected for their turns. After all they have to turn more than those who train in the majority of Fife venues.

The InCAS club continues to grow and develop as a true community swimming resource. The catchment area is no longer restricted to Inverkeithing and as well as the “Wing” InCAS members access the pools at HMS Caledonia (the Cally), Carnegie Leisure Centre, Lochgelly HS Community Use and Cowdenbeath Leisure Centre. The inclusivity of InCAS families stretches to Inverkeithing, Dalgety Bay, Rosyth, North Queensferry, Lochgelly, South Queensferry, Dunfermline, Duloch and even as far afield as Ladybank and Cupar.

Disability Sport Fife is proud to identify the InCas club as a major partner in the promotion of swimming at all levels of the performance pathway. InCAS is proud that it does not have a waiting list. Trials are readily available and the diversity of the squad structure means that all swimmers are welcome to join the family that is InCAS.
