Young Persons Sports Panel: Caitlyn Ross and Hayden Keir

Hello everyone, my name is Caitlyn and this is Hayden and we are part of Scottish Disability Sports Young Persons Sports Panel. Here is what we have been up to during lockdown.

So Caitlyn, what have you been up to during lockdown?

Well Hayden, I have been super busy during lockdown with online courses – one of my favourite courses has been learning British Sign Language. I have also been taking part in all of the activities  the Be Active Be Well Programme had to offer and I would like to thank SDS for putting this on throughout lockdown. This was a great saviour as it kept me fit/active while I couldn’t attend all my different sports and I also got to try and explore new sports like Yoga, Tai Chi, High-Intensity Interval Training, Callanetics, Stretching and Wheelchair Based Exercises. However, that was only the active side of the programme: I also took part in the Wellbeing side too that helped you focus and look after your mental health. I especially loved the self-hypnosis, nature therapy, oxygen advantage and so much more and even learned so many new things and techniques to help me cope with different situations. I also learned that the way I used to draw/write to help me communicate and to tell people of what I was meaning or wanting to say is called Sketchnoting.

That isn’t all I have been doing throughout lockdown! I have been doing exercise videos with the Law Enforcement Torch Run Scotland Team for Special Olympics and this went Global as we joined in, as the LETR team in Ontario, Canada started this movement and it went all over Canada, USA, Scotland and even all the way to Australia. We call them our #10aDayTilItsOk challenge where you pick an exercise a day and do 10 repetitions of that exercise and video it then post it on Social Media so that others can watch and join in. This was a great way to stay connected to everyone throughout lockdown and also kept us active/fit. I also made a lot of new friends from all over the world by doing this and can’t wait to meet them all in person in the future. We even did a Virtual Global Torch Run and I got to go to a few of Scotland’s finest landmarks which was great fun as I got to see the team in person for the first time in months.

Most recently I took part in the Virtual Kilt Walk where I walked 27.8 miles for Forth Valley Disability Sport and raised in total (this is including the 50% from the Hunters Foundation) £705 for them which I’m so grateful for everyone supporting me and donating to this wonderful charity as they have helped me so much throughout my sporting journey and wouldn’t be where I am today without them. Also by doing this it has lead me in a new volunteering path by becoming a walk leader and helping at the Braveheart Health Walks in my home town so I’m now giving back to my community and meeting new people every week.

So Hayden you have heard all about my amazing adventures during lockdown. What have you been up to during Lockdown?

Well Caitlyn throughout lockdown I have rediscovered my love for Robot Wars, a childhood show of mine that was rebooted in 2016 before ending again in 2018.

Another thing I have found a new love for is Lego and encouraging others to give Lego a try with either a Lego set or just random bricks.

I have also been doing the BBC’s Couch to 5K, where I’m just about to start week 5 of the Challenge. This has kept me active during lockdown and helped me for when I had to pack up and move boxes as I have recently moved house and now that I’m settled in my new house I can’t wait and looking forward to what opportunities will arise in the summer.

Real Challenges of Being an Athlete and Student

Young Persons Sports Panel – Shelby Watson

As the heading suggests I am and athlete and a student. But I feel like the true challenges of being both are hidden away by the false pretences of social media.

These past few months have held the highlights of this year so far but also brought about some struggles. This year I got a letter, a selection notice. I have been selected to represent my country once again for my favourite competition, a competition that four years ago I claimed my first world records in. I am over the moon, it is such an honour! But with that delight came the dread of will I get all my course work done in time? After all these past few months and the months ahead are the most critical. So amongst the stress of exams, work overloads and the reality of an empty bank #StudentProblems… it’s been a year of prioritising.

As an athlete you will get many opportunities to compete at plenty of competitions. However to truly mange a career in sport and be a full time student you must learn to sacrifice. This year I have yet to attend a competition, there are many factors as to why but the reality is I have to have priorities. The CPISRA World Games in August is this year’s priority.

However like stated above this year has had its Challenges. At the start of this year I grew hips (yay me) and after years of looking 12 I finally look 20 (my age). Why is this a challenge?…. because I could no longer fit in my 15 year old made to measure racer. I cried. A lot. But this isn’t about my weight gain, so how does it relate? Well my time off training while I waited for my racer gave me the chance to reflect back.

This was my routine:

  1. Train
  2. Eat
  3. Placement
  4. Train
  5. Eat
  6. Study
  7. Sleep
  8. Repeat

But after some reflection I realised I didn’t have any me time! I cannot stress the importance of “me” time to another athlete enough. The stress of a student mixed in with being an athlete is a lot. But it can be done!

I have been so focused on my studies and my training that I didn’t see the bigger picture. I was once told everyone has a “Cookie Jar” – this jar is filled with all the challenges a person has ever had in their lives. And like most people mine has possibly been filled three times over just in the past month. I’ve had so many fall backs in my athletic career already, from not being able to compete on the world stage to out-growing a very expensive racing chair. As a student I’ve had exam results lower than what I worked for and a bank account that’s got way more money going out than coming in.

But that’s life. It’s not a sob story but the challenging truth of being an athlete and a student. On social media you will only ever see my success, I will not post about my challenges and so by sharing this with you all I hope to ensure other athletes that it’s okay to be overwhelmed with the lifestyle. We’re meant to face challenges in order to come out stronger on the other side. I know I have.

This article isn’t a moan, it’s just me expressing my truth. It’s a hard life choice but it’s worth it as long as you’re willing to work hard for it. So my secret? Priorities, work hard, it’s okay not to be okay and always find time for reflection!

YPSP Blog – Caitlyn Ross

Since my last blog on the Scottish Disability Sport website I was picked to compete at the Special Olympics in Sheffield.

The event took place from the 7th-12th of August and I competed in athletics for the Forth Valley team. The events I competed in at the Special Olympics were shot putt, mini javelin (turbo javelin), 100m and the 4 x 100m relay.

During my time at the Special Olympics I made new friends and caught up with old ones, and won a few medals. I won gold in shot putt, gold for mini javelin (turbo javelin), also achieving a personal best of 16.34 metres! I was sixth in the 100m and in the 4 x 100m relay my team won bronze which was a great achievement for us as it was a really fast race against really hard and strong teams.

I would like to say well done to everyone who worked hard from the organising of this event to the running of it and the people who competed in the Special Olympics to make it a wonderful experience.

Once I got home it was straight back into training and straight back into competing as I had Perth Championships where I won three golds and a bronze. My golds were for shot putt, discus and javelin, where I beat my personal best again, this time throwing 16.09m! The bronze medal was for the 100m. It was a great and successful day that everyone taking part enjoyed.

I have one competition left of the season which is Scottish Disability Sport Senior Athletics Championships on 13 September. I am really looking forward to this competition as I unfortunately missed it last year and hope to win back my titles this year. After that competition it will be the start of my really hard winter training to prepare for the next season ahead.

Retirement

Retirement – it’s a strange word to use when you are only 24 years old, but when you have been in sport for 20 years it starts to make more sense.

At the end of 2016 I retired from professional sport after 18 years as a swimmer and two years as a triathlete. I’ve had my ups and downs but one thing that stayed constant was the support from my family, friends, Disability Sport Fife and of course Scottish Disability Sport. They were my rock and I can’t thank them enough for the support that they have given me.  They supported me when I missed selection to the Glasgow Commonwealth Games by 0.02 of a second, something that will always be the biggest disappointment in my sporting career – but also my greatest achievement. It sounds strange, doesn’t it, that something that brought me so much heartache and disappointment can also be my proudest moment in my swimming career, but it really was.

After my swimming career finished in October 2014, I decided I wanted a change of direction. Everyone supported me in my jump to triathlon, on my move south of the border and on my journey to the international stage of triathlon and competing for Great Britain, travelling around the world to places such as Italy, France and the USA. Now, you may think that this all sounds very glamorous and amazing getting to race around the world – which yes of course it was – but for a lot of the time in between the races and when I was back in Loughborough I was very down, during the long lonely days 300 miles from home when I just wanted to be with my friends and my family at home in Fife. There is no place like home. A cheesy saying I know, but in my case it’s true. They helped me get through those down times by visiting me, by FaceTiming me and by always being there when I needed to talk, it meant the world. I also came out as gay at the beginning of 2016, when again my family and friends were hugely supportive.

I am now officially retired from competitive sport, but new doors are opening for me all the time because of sport. I have recently started coaching the Orcas squad at Carnegie Swimming Club and later in the year I am going to be running the Edinburgh Marathon in aid of Cash For Kids Scotland. I have had huge support from Carnegie Swimming Club and Disability Sport Fife in reaching my target of being a swimming coach and I look forward to the challenges ahead.

So really the point I am trying to make in this wee blog is that no matter how successful or unsuccessful you are in sport, the people that help you along the way really matter. Your family, your friends, the organisations, the charities, whoever it is that helps you get to where you want to be, appreciate them and be thankful for them because they are what you remember when you retire.

2016 – 8 December

SDS & sportscotland joint young persons Sport Panel meeting

Thursday 8 December 2016

Meeting Minutes

In attendance: Jennifer Livingstone, Colette Martin, Caitlyn Ross, Callum Sloan, Gemma Lumsdaine, Hope Gordon, Lewis McConnell, Michelle Livingston, Rhys McCole, Alex Ball, Chey Carrigan, Liam Luporini

Apologies: Danielle Joyce, Mitchell Graham, Alan Gray, Shelby Watson, Stefan Hoggan, Ross Foley, Daniel Phillips, Nicole Currie

Overview

This meeting consisted of the SDS young persons sport panel and 3 members from sportscotlands young persons sport panel. The joint meeting was initiated by members of sportscotland panel noting an interest in disability sport. As a starting point both panels were sent the learning note from the Equality in Sport in Scotland paper (2015) and asked to read it and consider the following questions:

  1. Thoughts on the paper?
  2. Own experiences in relation to participation in sport/accessibility?
  3. What are the main barriers?
  4. What do you think the biggest difference would be in some areas?
  5. What could you do as a group to improve some of the issues and remove barriers?

Panel updates

All panel members individually introduced themselves, giving a little bit of background on their involvement in sport before an overview was given on both panels main aims, members and key outcomes achieved so far.

Both panels agreed the joint group aims would be:

  • To raise awareness in sport in general
  • To have more people with disabilities participating in sport
  • Be a voice for young people in sport

Discussion questions feedback

A photo of the flipchart paper feedback is attached to gain full feedback. From the discussion, the groups were asked to decide on two main areas to work on together moving forward:

  • Education and Knowledge
  • School visits

The groups felt going into schools and delivering presentations to teaching staff/pupils would help increase awareness of the opportunities available to participate in sport. This could include promoting the UK DIT course and encouraging teachers/senior pupils to attend. Although SDS already deliver a senior pupils course and a UK DIT to teachers, the panel members would like to go through the course to learn and suggest changes (if any) to make it more appealing to young people. JL to arrange for HL to come to the next meeting in March. JL has sent ML suggested dates and will confirm to all panel members when it is confirmed.

Alex from sportscotland panel is going to ask his school PE teachers at Linlithgow Academy what they do for pupils with a disability. The panels agreed that they would like to design a questionnaire to give to schools. Both panels have to think of example questions to go into the questionnaire and sent to JL and ML by the end of January.

Previous notes outstanding (for SDS panel only)

SDS Strategic Plan Consultation Summary

Question 1

·         New one – more about all participants; old one very much about performance
·         Impairment – all prefer disability
·         Don’t like disabled but disability is fine
·         Could widen the gap between able bodied and disability sport
·         Combination of both visions
·         Take out ‘performance’ as have ‘participants’
Question 2
·         Narrative beside diagram to explain SIM and new bits like what is inclusion environment, activity etc
·         Prefer blue one
·         Should have equipment in circle
·         Keep SDS logo in – put words in logo eg open etc
·         Take activity x3 out new one

Question 3
·         Yes, still need to be explicit

Question 4
·         More promotion
·         Better educated people eg more DIT-trained and aware of disability sport.  To ensure people don’t accidentally get involved but people know about disability sport and where to signpost/get involved
·         Links to nurses, doctors, physios
·         More available information
·         Raise awareness
·         Better marketing
·         More open days and come & try days
·         More coaches
·         UKCC Courses: disability element – all coaches trained to get qualification

Question 5
·         Influencing and educating doctors, nurses, physios to encourage athletes to take part in disability sport
·         More links to places like Wesmark
