Scottish Disability Sport Statement on Covid-19

In light of the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, Scottish Disability Sport aims to provide SDS Branches and sports clubs with further clarity and direction in relation to their planning whilst also ensuring the continued safety of participants and athletes. The following statement has been prepared by SDS:

All physical face-to-face national events including engagement days, para-sport festivals and national championships will remain cancelled until the beginning of September 2021. A further review will take place in May to review the position given the need to be responsive to the ever-changing position. All education and training sessions will continue to take place online with a further review for face-to-face delivery, also in May. As a multi-sport organisation advice from sportscotland, the sport-specific governing bodies, Active Scotland and the Scottish Government has been considered. This decision is to provide clarity for Branches and clubs to allow them to communicate effectively with their members.

The return of regional and national squad training will be considered on a case by case basis depending on the nature of the sport, the environment and the underlying health conditions of the athletes. Guidance and advice from sportscotland, the sport-specific governing bodies, Active Scotland and the Scottish Government will again be considered. SDS will provide ongoing support and guidance on the return to sport in Scotland. It is essential we remain alert to the ever-changing environment and SDS will endeavour to keep you up to date throughout.

All Scottish boccia clubs should follow the Return to Boccia guidance issued by SDS.

Many thanks to all the participants, athletes, coaches and volunteers for the support and patience you have all shown throughout this difficult period. Everyone at SDS looks forward to the day when we can support the facilitation of a safe return to sport.

https://www.gov.scot/publications/scottish-household-survey-2019-key-findings/
The Scottish Household Survey (SHS) results for 2019 have been published. The SHS provides robust data on a wide range of topics including sport and physical activity. It is the largest social survey of people across Scotland. The 2019 results are based on pre-covid surveys. The 2019 report finds just over half (54%) of the adult population participated in physical activity and sport (excluding walking), in 2019. This has remained broadly constant since 2007, and no change from last year. Participation (including walking), was lower for those living in deprived areas (70% for those living in the most deprived areas compared to 90% for those living in the least deprived). Ill health and disability had a big impact on participation. Those with a long-term limiting condition were less likely to be physically active (54% compared to 88% of those with no condition). All the data is now available on the SHS data explorer app.

8.2 Virtual Pentathlon Championships

Scottish Disability Sport are holding an Inter-Branch Virtual Pentathlon Championships in partnership with scottishathletics The Virtual Inter-Branch Pentathlon will be led by branches, using a guide distributed by SDS, to deliver a series of five athletic challenges to their members and participants over a five-week period in September (Sep 7 – Oct 11). Branches will be able to create their own leader boards for their members in each of the five individual events, as well as identify the ‘all-rounder’ who excels across all events and scores the highest combined points total across the five disciplines.

On a national level, branches will also be invited to submit their athletes’ results to Scottish Disability Sport for inclusion in the National Inter-Branch Pentathlon Leaderboard. Whilst the branch-level competition will be for individuals, the national event will collate team results to identify the Virtual Inter-Branch Pentathlon Champions. A trophy will be awarded to the winning branch. Branches should register interest but Friday 14 August and a registration form will be distributed to all registered branches.
